I recently had the privilege of staying at the beautiful Mandarin Oriental Hotel New York. It was our first visit to this amazing island, an item high on my personal ‘bucket list’, so I was ready to soak in every aspect of this fabulous city.
The Mandarin Oriental was everything it was supposed to be! Based on Columbus Circle, built on top of the Time Warner Center it was an incredible location. We easily manoeuvred around the city with the hotel being located close to The Lincoln Center, Fifth Avenue, Broadway and of course Central Park! We were in New York at a conference for my husband’s work so while he was busy I was able to see the sights with confidence of knowing I was never too far from our hotel. A quick cab ride (once I worked out how to hail one!) was always my preferred option.
The entrance was quite understated for such a beautiful hotel. Upon entering from the street we would take the lift to the reception area a few floors up. Once we arrived we knew we were in a 5 star hotel (that and the fact that the first person we spotted was Morgan Freeman!). You couldn’t help but look straight through the reception area to the lounge windows which displayed the most spectacular city views.
Once checked in we proceeded to our room. The 244 rooms and suites in this hotel all have floor to ceiling windows exposing views of The Hudson River, Manhattan or Central Park. Our room was blessed with beautiful city views. There was no escaping where in the world we were. The rooms were very spacious and luxurious with amazing bathrooms that would house our whole family!
We took advantage of our location and utilised the restaurants, not only in the hotel but also in the Time Warner Center. On the days that we were looking for a simple and quick breakfast or dinner we headed to the basement and ate at the Whole Foods Market. A definite must if watching your budget. Not only a massive market but they also made fresh food to order (not dissimilar to what’s currently being introduced into major supermarkets in Australia.) A great place to visit and eat!
If you have the opportunity to visit this beautiful hotel be sure to spend time exploring the Spa and Leisure Center and the pool area before heading home. Luxury was definitely the brief when designing these facilities, once again with breathtaking views of everything New York has to offer.
The Mandarin Oriental is a hotel I would be thrilled to return to, given the opportunity. The rooms were amazing, the service was impeccable and the location … awesome!
