If you watch social media you will notice that there is always a great deal of people that are very vocal that they think The Block should once again come back to Sydney; some even go so far to say they refuse to watch it anymore as Melbourne is clearly favoured.
Well, they’re right! And it’s all about business! At the end of the day The Block TV Show is as much a business as any bricks and mortar establishment and if it’s cheaper to produce the show in one location over another then that’s what they’ll do.
In an interview with a Sydney radio station Scotty Cam has confirmed that the reasons that Melbourne continues to be their city of choice is because it is just too expensive to create it in Sydney. Unfortunately when they filmed in Sydney the Council continually hit them with fines to do with their build including soil on the pavement five times. We can only imagine the parking fines that the contestants must have incurred from Council! During the Open For Inspections the police in Melbourne did not charge for crowd control whereas in Sydney they were charged $30,000. Most of the production crew has been relocated to Melbourne and even Scotty takes up residence here during most of the show’s taping.
With the Block’s applications just having closed we of course know that the next build will be in the hexagon motel on Commercial Road Prahran, right smack in the middle of the current Block and Glasshouse. Clearly the relationship with Stonnington Council is the difference between a difficult build and a not-so-difficult build for the producers. To date there has been no mention of where the following one will be so we will just have to keep our ears to the ground and wait and see.
